Learn the Law Faster

Learning the law faster leads to you spending more time than your peers building exam skills, taking practice exams and getting exam feedback. Primarily, students learn the law by reading cases, briefing cases and taking lecture notes. The ultimate goal of all three of these tasks is to construct an outline that can be used to answer exam questions.

Because outlines and case reading are usually not completed until the end of the semester, 1Ls are crippled by too little time to build exam skills, take practice exams and get quality feedback. My method frees 1Ls from being dependent on lecture to learn the most tested 1L topics or complete outlines. Additionally, the way that we will read and brief cases will not only accelerate your outlining but also your comprehension of course topics.

Complete Outlines Earlier

The reason most of your peers will not complete outlines until the end of the semester is because outlining requires an ability to synthesize and make sense of how the legal topics work together. Most students are not confident  or knowledgable enough to synthesize topics that are still new and foreign to them.

Working with me, I have the experience to guide you on where to focus our attention so that we don't waste time on topics that are not integral to strengthening your exam performance. My goal is to assist you in finishing outlines in advance so that for at least a full month before exams, you are writing exam answers and receiving feedback.

Complete Practice Exams Earlier

While Practice Exams are the best indicator of 1L success students tend to invest the least amount of time into completing them. Lack of incentive is one reason why most 1Ls rarely get exam practice. Even if a 1L were to write a practice exam answer, there are few if any resources for quality and line-by-line practice exam feedback.

By the time 1Ls are ready to take practice exams their professors' office hours are too crowded for meaningful feedback. Often students are left to do their best with model answers instead of personalized feedback.

While the number of completed exams varies depending on the student and the course, I'm committed to helping you get as much exam experience and line- before exam day as possible.

How Often Will I Meet With Franklin?

There are two phases of our work.  In the first phase I will guide you through the substantive material of your course. In the second phase I will assign practice exams for you to complete and for me to provide detailed feedback. During each of these phases the frequency of our meetings differ.

For students who begin working with me in the spring and summer our scheduled meetings are similar but are adjusted to accommodate existing class, work or vacation schedules.

In the first phase, I will meet with you throughout the week. Regular times will be scheduled that work well with your schedule. The reason that we meet weekly is that following each session you will be given a short turn-around assignment based on your course syllabi or the legal topics covered that week. These assignments put you ahead in case reading, case briefing and outlining for each course. Thus, the weekly sessions correspond with our expected scope of coverage for each week.

The second phase is less about explanation of law and more about practice exam writing and exam feedback. Much of the interaction will be through email correspondence. What typically transpires is that you will complete an exam and email your exam answer to me. I read, evaluate and critique the exam answer.

Lastly, I both return the exam with written edits and call you via phone or video conference to review the exam verbally. Ideally, you will continue this process of exam writing and exam feedback leading up to the day of exams.

How Will We Meet?

I will meet with you via zoom because it allows us to meet remotely from any location or time we choose. What also makes zoom convenient is that I can screen share all of the documents I reference.
